What is a Self-Designed Major?

A self-designed major is a topic of inquiry or study, designed by the student, that has not been widely recognized or may not available at the learning institution. A student studying in a self-designed program creates (with administrative approval) a program of learning to suit their specific educational wants and needs.
A self-designed major is perfect for any student who has an interest in a particular subject, but who cannot find an official college level degree program to study at. A self-designed major is also a good choice for a student who is interested in blending together two previously unrelated disciplines. Some universities have a whole department dedicated to self-directed learning so that students can attend classes on seemingly disparate topics through various schools at the university.
